Huck is surprised at Tom's willingness to help an escaped slave. Tom isn't doing this for Jim rather than as a challenge to his intellect and sense of adventure. Tom likes the rebellious aspect of this as well as hatching some long drawn out plan; unlike Huck, he cares little for Jim.
