While drifting downstream, they encounter an oncoming steamboat. It is old and big. It looks old, menacing, and empty as it heads towards the raft, Instead of getting out of their way as the steamboats usually do, the boat ploughs directly over the raft. Both Huck and Jim are forced to dive overboard.
