Florida has a number of areas in which the ground beneath the soil's top layer is made up of loose, organic material (muck). When a surface fire burns down into the muck, the organic material ignites, producing a stubborn, stinky fire. The muck fires are significant because they constantly burn, causing destruction and there's nothing that can be done about them. The muck fires, in their own way, are a bit like Erik Fisher..... always stirring something up, only to eventually ignite and cause trouble.
