At the end of the story Carton has a vision of what the future will be like in Paris and how people will recover after the Revolution is over. He envisions a future of Lucie with Darnay with a child who might be names after Carton. He also goes to his death knowing "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest I go to than I have ever known."
