analysis of character of charity royall and her internal and external conflict and her decisions and its outcome

Charity is our novel's protagonist. She was born in the mountains to an impoverished family; her mother was a woman of the night (prostitute).

Mr Royall took her away from the mountain when she was a little girl. When she turned 17 he forced his way into her bedroom. Mr Royall is totally responsible for helping her acquire the position as town librarian.

Her conflicts would be found in living down her past, trying to live up to the Mr Royall's expectation, and trying to determine the difference between things you do because you want to..... and things you do because you have to, or you fell obligated.
