I believe that Anderson is making the point that we, as humans, need to listen. The refusal to hear what someone is saying leads to isolation and a complete breakdown of communication. The refusal to hear leads to misunderstandings..... the inability to speak leads to the same. People need to listen and hear..... because if we don't, we stifle the voice of those who need to be heard.
