What is the relationship between Melinda and her parents?

Melinda's relationship with her mother and father is somewhat disengaged. Both of her parents work long hours, leaving them little time to bond with or notice the changes that are occurring with their daughter. Both of Melinda's parents also react negatively when faced with her falling grades..... their concern being the grades..... not Melinda. As a result, Melinda's depression is left unaddressed and unnoticed, and her bad grades are seen as a bid for attention.
