Walter Morel is a tragic figure in the way that he changes throughout the novel. He was once the undisputed head of the family....... funny and full of life. Over time, however, he turns to alcohol, alienates his wife and becomes as cruel, selfish alcoholic. His lack of interest in his children eventually alienates them as well.
