Discuss the vignette (chapter) entitled “Everything I Need to Know” (p. 15). What do you think of the cultural mandates that she must live by?

Compare it to the vignette of a similar title that appears later, “Everything I Need to Know Now” (p. 141) when she is in the city. How does it represent all the changes in her life?

In this section we learn that a women's lives must be lived in service to men, specifically, their husbands. Women may not eat with their husbands. They must sit and watch their husbands eat, taking care of and serving them throughout the meal. Afterward, wives are allowed the leftovers. Women are not allowed to turn away their husband's sexual advances, and they must have children until a male heir is produced. Only men are allowed to take part in local politics, and their focus is the preservation of customs and traditions.... the customs and traditions that oppress women.

Personally, I wouldn't be able to live in Lakshmi's world. What about you?
