Gawain has done pretty well. He honored his agreement with the Green Knight and took what was coming to him. The Green Knight calls him out on not being truthful about his green girdle armor. The knight gets all sad and humiliated,
"take this faithless thing (throws the girdle) may it rot! Fear of your blow taught me cowardice....."
Fortunately the Green Knight forgives him and sends the Knight on his way.
