Why does Emily take up with Homer Barron?

In context, we can infer that Emily had hopes he would marry her. When she realized that would never happen, she killed him to keep him from leaving her. Emily's father had always chased off her suitors, but her father was no longer around, and Miss Emily could do as she liked.... and she didn't want to be alone.
