In retrospect, we immediately learn that our story will revolve around the life of Miss Emily. We know that she was a recluse, that she never married, that her father was responsible for her never marrying, that Miss Emily purchased poison, that her beau (Homer) mysteriously disappeared, that the smell of death hung around her house, and that Miss Emily scorned all forms of modernization.
