Orwell does not think the British belong in Burma and disagrees with imperialism in general. The story reveals that imperialism is an unnatural institution. Orwell does not want to be stationed in Burma as a symbol of British occupation. He is forced to kill the elephant despite his reluctance. The act of shooting the elephant becomes a metaphor for British authority.
