Shantaram

Question about the text of "Shantaram"

Hi.

There is the following phrase from the novel "Shantaram" (chapter 1):

" A woman stooped to brush forward the black satin psalm of her hair".

What is the meaning of "psalm" in this sentance? (black satin psalme???)

As I know, "psalm" is from Bible and its meaning is a hymn, but "psalm of her hair"?

Thank you in advance.

Petre

From the information I have gathered, I would say this means the same as the "black satin crown or covering". Biblically, hair is referred to as a woman's glory... a covering. For a man, gray hair is a crown of glory.

Proverbs 20:29 : The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.
1 Corinthians 11:15: But if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
