How does the situational irony of the ending in Two friends contribute to your understanding of the story's theme about war?

The two men were actually fishing yet were killed for being spies. I suppose this shows us the brutality of war. There is also irony in that these Prussian soldiers knew the men were not spies but just wanted the password.
