I'm not sure that I see Francis as a foil to Adah's character, as I see him to be her antagonist. Francis manipulates Adah, and as a result, she changes from an independent, problem solver, who attacks her problems head on, to a young woman in love, who allow the man she is in love with to abuse her. As a result, Adah becomes a victim, and like many victims, she allows Adah's behavior to go unchecked.... even in court. She is afraid, yet dependant.... she is loyal to the man she sees as her resuer.
