Adam's experiment doesn't necessarily prove independence..... it proves that someone can start with nothing and improve their lot. The experiment itself is mean to prove or disprove Barbara Ehrenreich's findings that she recorded in "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America" and "Bait and Switch. Ehrenreich determined that those living in poverty were unable to escape it. Adam set a goal and wanted to see if he could reach it. Attaining a car, a job, lodgings, and having money in the bank to fall back are all important indicators of independence. The job provides money to live, the car provides transportation, the housing shelter, and the bank account something to fall back on in an emergency. Put all of these together, and you will find autonomy..... a beginning.
The second part of your question calls for "your" opinion. There is no right or wrong answer.
