Why do you think Jeremy spends so much time in his tree house?

Jeremy practically lives in his tree house because he wants to separate himself from his very racist family members. He hates what his family represents and living in the tree is his way of announcing to all the neighbors that he doesn't share their attitudes or opinions and wants to be friends.
