Crusoe faces numerous hardships including;

1) He boards a ship for London without the blessing of his family, and the ship meets with a vicious storm.

2) After taking command on the second ship he gained passage on (the captain died), the ship is attacked by Turkish pirates.

3) The Turkish pirates make Crusoe a slave (he remains in slavery for two years).

These are the initial hardships Crusoe faces in the novel, prior to his trip to Brazil and eventual shipwreck on the island.
