Why do you think the author described the massacre at the Brandt family farm in such bloody detail?

I think the author wanted to show the kind of carnage a raiding party can cause. It illustrates the violence and suffering of innocent people. Jefferson did not prepare for this kind of violence when he joined the army. He naively thought that war would be full of honour and valour.
