Ji-li grandparent's were sick, forcing Ji-li to take care of the household. Her father's detention leaves her torn, as she is being pressured to testify against him. She refuses, and as a result, her movements and opportunities are limited.
Ji-li often finds herself resenting members of her family because of their previous class status. Her grandmother's former status has limited her opportunities (also down through her father). She sometimes hates and blames her family for her limitations, but she never turns her back on them.
