Eliza is demonstrating that she has moved up in the world. Taxi's were meant for people with money and social status. At the start of the play, a wealthy woman, her daughter and her son were trying to catch a taxi as Eliza watched knowing this is out of her reach. Much later in the play, Eliza has been taught how to speak and act 'like a lady,' she is insulted when it is suggested that she walk, '...Walk! Not bloody likely... I am going in a taxi.'
