Silence plays a significant role in the novel; both as a reason for a of lack of speaking, and also as a form of communication. Silence actually almost becomes a character, albeit a very complex character that plays both protagonist and antagonist in the story. Silence influences characterization, atmosphere and methods of communication in the Purple Hibiscus; it characterizes rather than is. Silence is also important in affecting atmosphere, and for communication in relationships.
