Explain how class acts as an obstacle for characters that have ambitions in life?

If you are born of a lower class ambition to "better" oneself is a difficult thing. Victorian England was all about a rigid class structure. Being born poor meant there was a good chance one would die poor. The only hope for the Bennet girls to improve their situation is to marry "well" or beyond their present station in life.
