Poe's Short Stories

tell tale heart

Presently, I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It was not a groan of pain or of grief – oh, no! it was the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe.

Explanation and what does that quote tell about narrator

This quote describes the emotional condition of the old man, who is very aware that his moment of death has come. The narrator goes on to say he pitied the old man...... and then he chuckled. I'd say this makes our narrator a cold, determined killer..... souless.
