One major theme in the novel, Petals of Blood, is oppression. Types of oppression that are addressed include social, economic, political, racial, and sexual oppression. Oppression serves to control people's lives, preventing ordinary Kenyans from reaching their full potential. Social, economic, and political oppression is tied to capitalism..... racial oppression is illustrated in the way Europeans treated Kenyans during colonial rule. Sexual oppression is displyed through the character of Wanja, once a woman of great energy, intelligence, and sensitivity, who turns to prostitution in the face of economic failure.
