Why does Shelley dedicate a poem to a skylark?
Shelley writes a poem about the skylark because the bird’s singing captivates him. He marvels at the bird’s ability to pour out its “full heart” in song (4), and wonders about the things the skylark sings about. Because of the skylark’s ability to fly high above the earth, it is privy to a myriad of sights that humans living in Shelley’s day could only dream about. Shelley is filled with wonder and awe when he imagines the fountains and mountains that the skylark must see.
