Melody wanted to leave because it smelled so bad in the meat section of the store.

There were blocks being sold in the store that were tainted with lead, and would have been dangerous for kids to have. (Melody saw this on tv) She noticed that the blocks were still being sold, and so she tried to alert her mom by screaming and yelling, that they were dangerous and they should be taken out of the store. Unfortunatley, Melody's mother didn't understand why she was screaming, and just thought it was a meaningless tantrum.
