I don't think McMurphy's reasons for battling the big nurse are the same as the others on the ward. While most patience see the rebellion as entertainment with some perks along the way, McMurphy begins to see himself as a martyr, a Christ figure of sorts. McMurphy is tearing down the temple so to speak. He is casting out the false doctrine of people like Ratchet and exposing truth through rebellion.
