"I am so jealous of how poor you are
of how you are poor..."
The beginning of this poem opens with what the narrator will describe as a desperate want - and that is to be poor. Showing how importantly the narrator wants to be poor but not yet explaining why, the author uses the literary device of backwards repetition to draw in the reader for what is to come.
"Submit to disorientation
to starting over and again"
In the poem, "Submit", the narrator is constantly stating things to submit or resist to, and this is the last thing that he names. Ironically, the quote states submission to "starting over and over again", and all of the other lines of the poem start with the words "submit to". This last line is a wise choice to end the poem, since it leaves the reader hanging and wondering if the whole poem was actually built on those last words.
"You have your pick
of not being paid
or being unpaid"
The narrator uses this point, and by doing it, purposely tries to make herself sound a little foolish while keeping her cool. Not intended to be literal, she is using this example as just 'one more reason' to want to be poor. She wants this desperately, but finds it terribly hard to find any benefits of not having money.
