Steinbeck certainly gives us a man's world. There really is only one woman character in the story.
Curley's wife is a possession. She represents such loneliness that she doesn't even get a name. Curley is abusive although we never see them together. She spends much of the time "looking" for Curley although she is really looking for other companionship. Whenever Curley's wife shows up we see her loneliness. It pours out of her in resentment and disillusion. Other ranch men see her as a "tart" or simply a sexual object. George sees women, at least on the surface of things, as sexual objects. He wants to go into town and spend time in a cat house with "no messes" of meaningful social interaction.
