The puppy dies and Lennie feels bad about this. This foreshadows the death of Curley's wife who becomes another of Lennie's "stroking" accidents because he does not know how to be careful. Once the men realize that Lennie has killed her, they form a lynch mob to hunt him down. Ultimately George has to kill Lennie to tie up the final action.
