Nature is an important motif in the novel. Nature remains as serene and harmonious as in the begining, undisturbed, even in the face of the turmoil and tragedy that Lennie and George face. It is also something that both Lennie and George crave. In wanting to raise rabbits and own a farm, they exhibit a desire to return to the land and the land will provide all they need. The land and nature would also provide refuge for them away from the unhospitable, predatory,man-made world from. Steinbeck illustrates the idea that man's only hope, albeit, a slim hope, to live in peace is to lead a natural life.
