In Chapter Six, we see Steinbeck controlling the setting and bringing it around full circle to where we began. He begins by describing the area in the same way he did in the first chapter. He even uses the same type of animal imagery we were introduced to in Chapter One when he details the way Lennie drinks from the river like a thirsty dog. In this, Steinbeck's description, for all of its similarities, ultimately serves to illustrate how different things really are. George is no longer the tough, angry, forgiving man we first met, but rather, a shadow of the man he was. Lennie, always a dreamer, now suffers from disillusions and hallucinations. George knows what he must do, but Lennie is still an innocent..... unfortunately, the only way George can protect him is by doing what will be done with or without him.
