Converted by Olaf Tryggvason. Sent a priest to evangelize the Icelanders. Earlier missions also sought conversion. By late 990s religious tensions b/w Christians and Pagans had begun to accelerate → erupted in some killings where religion was the cause of fight. Widespread violence → isolated parts of the world, trade was the lifeblood of both colonies. Olaf threatened to block trade unless they converted to Christianity. Political and practical decision. Conversion of Greenland said to have been under Leif Eriksson's influence
One year at the Allthing, lawspeaker had to decide whether Iceland should be Christian or not, decides Christianity will be official religion. Says that pagan sacrifice can still be carried out in secret, but everyone must be baptized. IMP: Conversion to Christianity in convenient, 2 different valences of what acceptance of Christ means. Pre-Christian practices continued like infant exposure, eating of horse meat, beliefs about elves and dwarves.
