What was Portland known for?

I'm not sure what Portland, Maine was known for, but Ehrenreich chose to live and attempt to find work there because of its "whiteness". Other places she'd lived and worked while researching were far more diverse.... she believed she stuck out like a sore thumb. In Portland, she'd look like everyone else.
