why is bigger afraid of mr.britten

After taking the trunk down to the basement, Bigger is confronted by Mr. Dalton and his private investigator, Mr. Britten. Bigger is afraid that the investigator will find out what he did. Britten's racism, anti-Semitism and fear of Communists, prevent him from properly understanding what has happened. Throughout his investigations, Britten is unswerving in his conviction that Bigger is a Communist spy.
