Why did Mr. and Mrs. Dalton make Mary come back from Florida?

When Bigger and Jack are in the theatre, they see a commentary on the daughters of the wealthy..... Mary Dalton is one of the stars. In this scene, we learn that Mary is summoned home after her parents get wind of her behavior. We also learn that Mary is the daughter of the family with which Bigger has a job interview later that day.
