What does Bigger's messages to his mother and Jan Represent?

at the end of the novel Native Son Bigger asks max to tell his mother that he is ok, and to tell Jan Hello. What does this represent?

He wants his mother and Jan to know that he understands the decision made about his fate and that he is resigned to his ultimate end. I believe that he feels if his mother knows he was alright (Jan as well) that she'll suffer less.
