Analytical Question: How does Durrell make Lugaretzia such an interesting character?

Lugaretzia is an enigma and a breath of fresh air.... she makes us laugh. When Mrs. Durrell hires her, she thinks she is doing the old woman a favor..... surprisingly, the family quickly questions their mother's decision when they come to learn Lugaretzia is an emotional hypochondriac. She isn't grateful for the job, and she certainly doesn't want to work, but rather, spends her time complaining about her aches and pains. She also balks at criticism.
