This reveals friction between Thami and Mr. M. I think Thami is so bothered by Mr. M's expectations because he really does look up to Mr. M. Thami is frustrated by the slow almost backward movement of black rights in South Africa. In a sense he knows that Mr. M is right, education is the answer but Thami rebels against it.
