Why does Grampa get a little sad when they go to look at the fields?
Grampa feels sorry for himself because he can't move the way he used to. What makes him sad, however, is the desintegration of his relationship with his son. While reminiscing about his relationship with Harlan, Grampa starts to cry.... he quickly recovers himself when he realizes that Hiram is unconfortable.
