How is it that Mr. Breland can claim there was no motive for the defendants to kill Emmett Till?

Mr. Breland uses the fact that the men released Till in Mrs. Bryant's store because they determined he was not the one who'd done the whistling, thus, they had no way to link the crime to the defendants.
