Hiram is upset and saddened by Emmet's death, whereas, his grandfather is only concerned about the reputation of the community.

Grandpa want Hiram to stay out of the trial, whereas, Hiram wishes to do the right thing, and is testifying enable him to do this, he wishes to be a witness in the trial.
