The main conflict in the novel is Misha's lack of identity. Misha is an orphan who has no idea who he is, or where he is actually from. Over the course of the novel, Misha will make many decisions based upon his need for an identity. In taking on a Jewish identity, Misha finds himself in the midst of another conflict..... as the Nazis believe him to be Jewish..... as he claims to be, and their intent is to annihilate the Jews. Thankfully, Misha survives the Holocaust and is comfortable in the identity of the boy (young man) he's become.
