Chapter 26 is the final chapter of the novel. Frank travels back to the farm, goes to the barn, and helps the old man (Bunky) nail posts. Frank tells Bunky that Eldon has passed, they eat together, and Frank tells Bunky about Eldon’s stories. The old man asks Frank if he forgives Eldon, and Frank says he doesn’t know. He tells Bunky that he has been his father for all these years, and Bunky replies, eyes shining, that he hoped he would be. Frank gives Bunky a stone from Eldon’s grave, and Bunky thanks him. Frank then goes out onto the land, watching the sun set across the valley, closing his eyes. When he opens them, he sees the ghostly shape of people riding horses through the trees, of women gathering herbs and berries. Frank raises his hand to the idea of his mother and father and a line of people he’s never known. He then rides back to the farmhouse, where the old man is waiting.
