What do you think is more important for Matilda : telling the truth or protecting herself? Why?

Matilda isn't particularly noted for being a 'liar', but she does cunning things to get back at Miss Trunchbull. In light of this, perhaps she's more concerned with self-preservation. She does keep her powers mostly a secret after all- lying by omission?
