I suppose freedom can be a theme in the novel. Matilda simply wants the freedom to be herself. She wants to learn at her level. She wants to explore her world but is stifled by her family and Miss Trunchbull. Similarly Miss. Honey is also stifled and controlled by Miss Trunchbull. She cannot live the way she wants or even give her students the kind of education that she wants.
