    How does Jeff Hirsch explore the theme of escapism?

    The theme of escapism is dominant throughout the novel. Most of Hirsh's characters want to escape their current states and start a new life elsewhere. For instance, Glen's mother disappears when her daughter is six years old because she is tired of living in the Colloquium. Similarly, Glen is working hard in her studies to invent a new planet where she can live happily. Glen describes his current area as miserable because she is not happy. Therefore, Glen's mission is to escape from her place and start a new life elsewhere.

    Why is Glen’s father so determined to complete his science project despite the threats from the government?

    Glen's father is a brilliant scientist who believes he can return his wife. The father wants to invent a metal bracelet that can help his daughter to keep her memory intact when she crosses the border to bring back her mother. However, the government is against such innovations because many people will cross the border knowing they can return anytime. Therefore, the government issues several directives to stop Glen's father from his invention. Still, he ignores them and continues with his project because he is determined to bring his wife back.

    What makes Kelvin a unique character in the novel Magisterium by Jeff Hirsch?

    Kelvin is Glen's childhood friend. Kelvin's personality and willingness to support Glen unconditionally make him a unique character. When Glen tells Kelvin about her secret invention, Kelvin remains loyal to her course. More importantly, Kelvin helps Glen selflessly to accomplish her goals. Towards the end, Kelvin helps Glen to cross the border to start a new life.
