Jim

Over the course of the story, Jim makes numerous mistakes. Certain decisions, like refusing to take responsibility for his actions and drinking too much are foolish. Attempting to take advantage of Margaret because of his drunkeness is inexcusable. All in all, Jim makes it difficult to feel sorry for him, but we do feel sorry for his situation. Jim is unprepared for the life he has chosen, and he is too willing to do things thing he might otherwise question to improve his own place. He leaves himself open to manipulation, and he is too willing to do whatever it takes to fit in, which only serves to illustrate the fact that he never will.
